![]() ![]() And if you consider that there are over 120 major languages. And some of the dialects of the same languages are so different from each other that they almost act like a language in itself. I am an Indian and we got like 22-25 distinct languages in the country with over 720 dialects. are there dialects spoken in your country of origin? Like maybe a different dialect in the cities as compared to the rural areas or different types of slang? Or does everyone speak the same?Īre there dialects spoken in your country of origin? Like maybe a different dialect in the cities as compared to the rural areas or different types of slang? Or does everyone speak the same? But I guess America wants so bad to be "pure", and people speaking non-white dialects or god forbid, non-English languages with their friends, does not match up with their concept of cultural purity. Besides, languages are dynamic and grow and change and that's part of their beauty. There's nothing wrong with speaking a dialect, it's a way to show connection with a community and pride in your roots. The double standard with that disgusts me, becase it's actually no different than what black Americans do when using double negatives or other aspects of their dialect. It is considered a mark of regional pride to speak the local dialect. But my country here is mainly lily white so there is no widespread denigration of people's "refusal" to speak the standard language. They're not stupid, they just grew up on a farm or small town and never needed the standard language. ![]() There are even older people who can't really speak the standard language so well. There are folks here who say that the dialect is their true mother tongue and the standard language is what they speak in official settings. No disrespect against the standard language, but a kid who grows up here starts learning the dialect first and the standard language when they get to school. It doesn't make us wrong or stupid or uneducated, it just means that we're mountain people and that's how we talk when we speak our dialect with each other. In my other other language, we speak a dialect of that language that would be considered "incorrect" as compared to the "standard" variety of the language. The short answer is, those are the grammar rules of the dialect of American English that they speak. r/DoesAnybodyElse Ever read the main rules of reddit? Check it out.
